Don't Miss the Year of the Arts (End of the Year) ArtSmart Celebration!

We are celebrating the culmination of the “Year of the Arts” ArtSmart initiative by having music, food, presenters, an art show and more in the Community Room on May 7 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. We also will be recognizing our sponsor, Terry Stevinson for his support of this year-long challenge of discovering the importance of the arts in everything here at the College and within our community. Obscura's Open Mic Event is Coming Up!

May 3rd from 12:00-1:00pm in the Great Hall

Copies of the Obscura magazine will be given out, and anyone will be allowed to present their poetry, short stories, music, or other forms of performance. We hope to see you there!

ArtSmart presents ZULA - an arts zine of RRCC student works. Be featured in the next edition!

Zula - 1st EditionFirst edition available now!

ArtSmart is starting an arts zine named "Zula" which will display current RRCC student works. This is to be a monthly paper booklet of student work, events and activities. It is an opportunity for students to be recognized beyond the classroom. Zula will be distributed free on campus for our students and staff.

It will allow students to showcase their work within the arts. For example any class project that is arts-related, plays, theater and dance classes, poems, creative writing, painting or drawing, pottery, fiber arts, photography, sculpture and/or however you display the arts at RRCC.

If you would like to submit a piece to be displayed in the zine:

  • Submit a black and white photo/file of your photography, artwork, or event at RRCC (theater, class in which you have integrated the arts, etc.). Email the photo file to Mary (gigoly@gmail.com) or Kevin (kevin.peterson18@gmail.com).
  • If you are submitting poetry, a short story or any type of written submission, please email or print a copy that is edited. Email submission to Mary (gigoly@gmail.com) or Kevin (kevin.peterson18@gmail.com).
  • Sign and fill out an RRCC waiver: this can be handed to or scanned and emailed to Mary or Kevin.
  • With submission please attach your name, class that work was created in, title and a short blurb about your work or event (such as a review).

ArtSmart Art Show

February 14: Obscura submissions due

Submit your works of art for our newest edition!

In the darkest corner of Red Rocks, minds are abuzz, humming with creative impulses in need of an outlet. Obscura is that outlet. Short stories (fiction and non), poetry, art, and photography are all welcome. So submit your work and join us in the creation of our 9th edition of RRCC's student-published art and literary magazine.

Submission Criteria:

  • Fiction and Non-fiction may be up to 5,000 words long
  • Poetry may be a max of two pages long
  • All art must be submitted as a PDF
  • A maximum of three submissions per student per issue

Send all submissions to RRCCObscura@gmail.com by February 14th.

January 9 - February 29, RRCC's Susan K. Arndt Gallery

The State of the Art-A Fiber Art Show

Fabric and fiber will be the focus of The State of the Art, a joint exhibition of Red Rocks Community College, Studio Art Quilt Associates, and Surface Design Association opening January 9 in the Susan K. Arndt Gallery at RRCC.  The exhibition is a cooperative project between RRCC and the two associations as part of the college’s ArtSmart program, a year-long celebration that recognizes the arts in everything around us.

This unique showcase of textile art will include stitched textile art, art cloth, book art, vessels, jewelry, and garment accessories, as well as sculptural work.  The exhibit will feature approximately 25 artists and 40 exhibits, including multiple live demonstrations of artists’ techniques.  A catered opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday January 25, from 4-7 p.m. and the show will run through Feb. 29, 2012. Human Behavior is Puzzling, Isn’t It? Come See “Pieces of Eight!” An evening of 8 ten-minute plays! Plays will be running November 3,4,5,10,11,12 @ 7:30PM and November 13 @ 2:00PM.
