Kathryn G. Zeiler, Ph.D. holds a Bachelor of Arts in Botany from the University of South Florida College of Natural Sciences and a Doctorate in Medical Sciences (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. She was awarded a National Academy of Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowship to continue her training at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) in Golden, Colorado in 1989. Following her postdoctoral training, Kate accepted a position as Staff Scientist at SERI where she conducted research on the genetic engineering of microalgae for increased oil production. She was a lead scientist on a project to develop algae as a means of carbon dioxide remediation. SERI was designated as a national laboratory in 1991 and became the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). In 1996 Kate decided to pursue a career in teaching and held positions at Metro State College and University of Denver. In 1997 she began teaching for Red Rocks Community College as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Natural Sciences. In the fall of 2000 she accepted a full-time position at the college. She currently teaches biology, field biology, microbiology, botany, cell biology, molecular biology and anatomy and physiology.
