Red Rocks Community College Celebrates 3rd Annual Powwow
Sponsored by Jeffco Public Schools, RRCC and CSM

LAKEWOOD, CO – The Red Rocks Community College Pavilion, located on the east-end of the college’s Lakewood Campus, will be alive with the color, beauty and spirit of the Native American culture this coming weekend. On Sunday, May 26 the 3rd Annual RRCC Powwow opens to the public at 12 p.m. and admission is free of charge. (Recent RRCC Alumni are welcome to a free meal honoring graduates from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.) Organized events and vendors will entertain and educate visitors of all ages; competitive dancing begins in the early afternoon.

All competitive dancers will enter the Pavilion at 1 p.m. for the Grand Entry. Native American dancers of all ages will compete in the following categories: Tiny tots, junior boys and girls, teen boys and girls (13- to 17-years), adult men and women, and golden age dancers. Dancers will adorn intricately detailed native dress and participate in traditional dances that are accompanied by several drum circles.

Master of ceremonies Cordell Kills Crow will lead the dance competition and announce other activities such as a 50/50, Cake Walk and Potato Dance. Vendors circle the large dance arena and food, souvenirs, hand-made jewelry, native crafts and more will be available to visitors and competitors. All ages will enjoy professional face painting, a photography booth, and countless educational experiences. The entire community is invited to attend the event to celebrate the beauty and history of Native American culture, music, dance, and art. The Powwow organizers request that the competitors’ religious and cultural beliefs are respected by only photographing the dancers with their permission.
