SONOGRAPHY (ULTRASOUND) PROGRAM

Welcome to the Sonography Program of Red Rocks Community College.

Sonography (Ultrasound) is one of the dynamic, fast-paced, rapidly advancing fields within Medical Imaging. The four semester (17 months), full-time program at RRCC prepares students for entry-level positions in the field.

The highly skilled professional who performs ultrasound examinations in a clinical facility is known as a sonographer, ultrasonographer, or ultrasound technologist. There are various specialties within the field that include the abdomen, obstetrics and gynecology, vascular, neurosonography, and echocardiography. The sonographer is a key member of the health care team that provides individualized care to a variety of patients utilizing highly technical instrumentation to create and interpret images of the internal organs, tissues, and blood flow.

This career requires people who are highly skilled in performing the tasks of the field. Our students receive an education in the didactic requirements of the field by highly qualified instructors with the advanced certification required.

The didactic courses are supplemented with hands-on lab instruction and practice in our lab facilities at the Arvada campus. In addition to the didactic education students receive, there is a hands-on clinical component within the program that affords students the opportunity to work in clinical environments in the area, under the supervision of qualified staff, while utilizing their learned skills on actual patients.

The Sonography Program at Red Rocks Community College offers students three areas of specialization:

Diagnostic Medical Sonography - This track prepares students for the ARDMS examination in the areas of Abdominal and OB/Gyn. These sonographers typically work in a radiology setting at a hospital or outpatient center. Students have the opportunity to choose between the Associate of Applied Science degree option, or the Certificate of Completion option.

Vascular Technology - This track prepares students for the ARDMS examination in the area of Vascular Technology. These sonographers typically work in a vascular laboratory at a hospital or physician office. Students have the opportunity to choose between the Associate of Applied Science degree option, or the Certificate of Completion option.

Echocardiography - This track prepares students for the ARDMS examination in the area of Adult and Pediatric Echocardiography. These sonographers typically work in a cardiology setting at a hospital or physician office. Students have the opportunity to choose between the Associate of Applied Science degree option, or the Certificate of Completion option.

Red Rocks Community College accepts 16-20 students each year. Admission into the program is extremely competitive and clinical site dependent. Please go to the Frequently Asked Questions and Step-by-Step Instructions for Admission pages for further information.

Although cost depends on many factors, as a general rule, expect the cost to be about $6,000, including textbooks and uniforms, using the RRCC tuition table. This cost does not include the general education courses for the AAS degree, transportation, meals, housing, or other living expenses.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is located in the Medical Imaging Education department at the Arvada campus.
