Diagnostic Sonography (Ultrasound) Program

Admissions Process

A new class in the Diagnostic Sonography program begins each fall. Persons interested in admissions to the program must complete several steps prior to submitting an application. Applications are accepted each June, for classes beginning in August that year. There are three areas of study to choose from: Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Vascular Technology, and Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography. The program is 4 semesters (17 months) in length. Students attend full-time and must complete the course work in sequence.

A 2 year degree/certificate in a patient care related field such as Radiography, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, or Physical Therapy;

or

A Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in any field.

Note: Qualifying degree or certificate must be from an accredited (regionally or programmatically) institution in the United States or Canada.

• Apply to Red Rocks Community College and provide any transferring, official*, transcripts to the Student Records department. The Student Records department will evaluate transferring transcripts to determine if they will equate to RRCC general education requirements for the sonography program. Please request that a copy of your transfer documentation be sent to the sonography program.
  
  
• Take the Accuplacer examination for Math, Reading, and English. Applicants must score at least 85 in Math, 80 in Reading, and 95 in English.
  
  
• If English is not an applicant's first spoken language, the TOFEL examination must also be taken. A minimum score of 71 (IBT) is required for admission.
  
  
• Complete the DMS Application, which is available on the DMS website.
  
  
• You should seek opportunities for job shadowing at local healthcare facilities. Points are earned for every 4 hours of shadowing performed. Job shadowing is not required. Job shadowing forms can be found at: http://www.rrcc.edu/dms/MIEJobShadow.pdf
  
  
• Submit all required materials to the Medical Imaging Department at RRCC between May 1st and May 31st.
  
  
• Applications will be evaluated and scored. Points are awarded for type of degree, GPA, prior healthcare work experience, job shadowing, and writing skills. These scores are totaled and the top 30 individuals are invited for an interview. A panel interview is conducted and the interview scores are added to the application scores. From the total scores, the top individuals are selected for admission to the sonography program in the fall. The number of students selected varies between 12 and 24 depending on available clinical sites.
  
  
• Interviews will be held during the third and fourth weeks of June.
  
  
• Orientation for applicants selected for the DMS program will be held the first week of the fall semester.

*official transcripts are transcripts that the student orders from the institution to be sent directly to our institution. Official transcripts are also transcripts given to you by the institution in a sealed envelope with the registrar's seal or signature across the envelope seal and not opened by the student.
