An Exciting Opportunity

The need for Emergency Management continually grows as our population and exposure to natural and technological hazards increase.

This need has created opportunities for lucrative careers in Emergency Management.

The ability to perform essential work in a disaster requires skills in emergency operations and management. Through either its Associate Degree or Certificate programs in Emergency Management and Planning, Red Rocks Community College is the place to acquire that knowledge or to expand your knowledge and skills. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recognizes this program as one of the pioneering programs in the country.

Floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, train wrecks, and hazardous chemical spills are all examples of public emergencies in which life and property are endangered. How well a community or an organization prepares for and deals with these and other kinds of disasters can affect not only their economic viability but people's lives.

What Emergency Managers and Planners Do

Professionals in this field can be federal, state or local government officials; employed by volunteer organizations or the private sector. They work to minimize the effects of disasters on the public through prevention, public education, planning and effective response operations. They must be effective problem solvers, decision makers and communicators. They must work well with all kinds of people in crisis situations.

About the RRCC Emergency Management & Planning Degree and Certificate Program

Red Rocks Community College is offering both an Associate Applied Science Degree in Emergency Management and Planning and an Associate of Applied Science Certificate.

The Associate Degree is geared toward new entrants into the Emergency Management field. This degree requires the completion of 60 credit hours, including the core EMP courses. Some elective courses may not be available over the Internet.

The Certificate program is geared toward current practitioners who want to upgrade their skills.

The core EMP courses offered by Red Rocks, over the Internet, include all seven courses required for the coveted FEMA Professional Development Series Certificate. These courses are Principles of Emergency Management, Emergency Planning, Exercise Design, Leadership and Influence, Decision Making and Problem Solving, Effective Communication, and Developing Volunteer Resources.
