EMT- Basic

The EMT-Basic program is an entry-level course, no experience is required. It takes one semester to complete. Pre-requisites are age 18 by the first day of class, a high school diploma or GED and satisfactory scores on the ACCUPLACER college entrance tests or equivalent.

Upon successful completion of the class, students are eligible to take the National Registry EMT-Basic certification exams. After passing the National Registry EMT-Basic practical and written exams, and submitting a fingerprint based background check to the Colorado Department of Health, students may then be eligible for Colorado EMT-Basic certification. Scheduled Courses

Please check the Red Rocks Community College schedule for dates and times of upcoming classes. The course prefix and number is EMS 125.

EMS 170 is a co-requisite for EMS 125. It includes 30 hours of ambulance ride-alongs and hospital emergency room shifts. They will be scheduled outside of class hours.

Course Cost

Course costs are based upon 10 credits. Resident tuition and fees for the EMT-Basic course (EMS 125 & EMS 170) are approx. $1,400* (with COF applied). Costs for required textbooks and equipment are approximately $200*. Prior to the clinicals, there are costs for a physical exam and vaccinations, as well as $59* for a background investigation. Testing and certification costs after course completion are approximately $145*. *Subject to change.

Application Process

  • All students interested in attending the program are highly recommended to attend a program information session. A schedule of sessions may be found at www.rrcc.edu/ems.
  • For admission to the program please contact Sarah Goepel, CTE Advisor, at sarah.goepel@rrcc.edu no less than one to two weeks after submitting your background check through American DataBank. She will schedule your appointment once you have successfully passed the background check. You must bring the following information to your scheduled appointment. You will also need to bring a copy of the items to the first day of class.
  • Proof of age 18 by the first day of class (no exceptions).
  • Documentation of ACCUPLACER scores at the college level.
    • Reading Comprehension -80 or higher
    • Sentence Skills-95 or higher
  • Completion of high school or a GED.

  • A completed Physical Examination form, signed by a health care provider, documenting that you do not have any condition that would endanger your health or that of your patients during EMT-Basic training. Proof of vaccinations and a recent TB test are also required.
  • A CPR card demonstrating completion of a CPR course at either the Healthcare Provider or Professional Rescuer level.
  • Proof of health insurance coverage. *Subject to change.
