EMT- Basic
Summer 2006 Information
Thank you for inquiring about the Emergency
Medical Technician – Basic program at Red Rocks Community
College. The EMT-Basic program is an entry-level course, no experience
is required. It takes one semester to complete. Pre-requisites are
age 18 by the first day of class, a high school diploma or GED and
satisfactory scores on the ACCUPLACER
college entrance tests. Upon successful completion of the class,
students are eligible to take the National Registry EMT-Basic certification
exams. Upon passing the National Registry EMT-Basic practical and
written exams, and submitting a fingerprint based background check
to the Colorado Department of Health, students may then be eligible
for Colorado EMT-Basic certification. Please read the functional

competency areas and tasks of Emergency Medical Technicians.
The course is offered at the following
times:
EMS 125 section 001:
Monday & Wednesday 8:30 – 5:00; Friday 1:00 – 5:00
First day of Class: May 31st

EMS 125 section 002:
Tuesday & Thursday 8:30 – 5:00, Friday 8:30 – 12:30
First day of Class: May 30th

30 hours of clinical shifts / ride-alongs
are also required. They will be scheduled outside of class hours.
The courses will conclude the first week
of August. National Registry practical and written exams will be
offered at Red Rocks Community College in August or in early September.
Course costs are based upon 10 credits.
Resident tuition and fees for the EMT-Basic course (EMS 125 &
EMS 170) are approx. $950.00. Costs for required textbooks and equipment
are approx. $150.00. Prior to the course, there are costs for a
physical exam and vaccinations, as well as $59.00 for a background
investigation. Testing and certification costs after the course
are approx. $125.00
Application Process
All students interested in attending and
EMT-Basic Course at Red Rocks Community College must attend an orientation
session. After completion of the orientation session, the student
may schedule an enrollment appointment with a faculty member. The
following information must be brought to that appointment:
- A signed application for admission
to the program
- A current resum
- A copy of their High school diploma
or transcripts, GED, or College diploma or transcripts.
- A photocopy of a drivers license or
other proof of age (you must be 18 by the first day of class)
- Documentation of ACCUPLACER
scores. All students must take the ACCUPLACER test. Minimum scores
required are 80 on the reading section and 95 on the sentence
skills.
No enrollment appointments will be conducted
if the candidate’s application packet is incomplete!
Upon completing the enrollment appointment,
the student will be given permission to enroll in the class.

Once students are accepted into the program,
students must complete the following:
- Have or obtain a current CPR for Healthcare
Providers or CPR for Professional rescuers card.
- Complete the Physical Examination form,
signed by a health care provider, documenting that you do not
have any condition that would endanger your health or that of
your patients during EMT training. Proof of vaccinations and a
recent TB test are also required.
- Complete a background investigation
through American DataBank. Contact them at http://www.healthcareex.com
and complete all appropriate paperwork. Do not forget to fill
out the Disclosure and Release form. (The fee for the background
investigation is $59.00) Information will be forwarded to Red
Rocks Community College regarding your eligibility for enrollment.
