Honors Joinery/Bench Building
Spring 2006 Schedule

Students in the Honors Joinery Class during the year, and the Bench Building class in the Summer months design and build thier own Workbench. This is a rewarding and educational experiance with which very few things in the world of Woodworking can compare.

Students who have either taken the Intense Introductory Course (FIW 101), or a combination of FIW 100 & FIW 201 are able to attend this class. They are not given a set of plans, but are forced into designing their own bench.

Below is the general bench idea students are given, many students choose to diverge from this and create either a Germal style bench, or incorporate a cabinet into their bench.

This Bench is a Scandanavian Style Bench, and is very similiar to the Bench on which I began leanring the trade from my Grandfather.

The Following links will let you examine the various joints which I recommend for joining the stretchers to the Trestle Assemblies. These are all cut-away views.

If you zoom-in on various portions of the joints on the Bench below, you can go right into the wood and exam the joints themselves. You'll notice that the legs have different joints, this is for educational purposes- and not exactly how I would choose to assemble a bench

The school in complete with two benches I have made myself during classes. While I find CAD drawings as useful for some demostrations, the students are also able to see a bench being built. This is the bench that I use for the demonstrations.

Apart from the CAD drawings, demonstrations, and actual bench, I recommend that students purchase Taunton's Workbench Book by Scott Landis.
