As of 2005 we will be only offering the Canoe Class in the summer months. This is due to space restrictions.
This is the ultimate fun course. The construction of a strip canoe is a unique experience, and one I suggest to any woodworker or outdoors-person. The class begins with an investigation into canoe design. Once a design is decided upon, by that class we begin lofting that design onto stations. Thus begins construction of the form on-which to build the canoe (strong-back).
Once the form and stems have been built, you begin laying on the thin strips of wood (usually Western Red Cedar). These first strips are quite the experience, as you begin to see a hint of the final result. After the strips are laid and a little planing and sanding (okay, sometimes a lot), you are ready for the first coat of epoxy. This is when that true excitement really begins, a moment of self-satisfaction that you really must experience to appreciate.
During the class, you learn milling of material, bending and laminating, and lofting. Time permitting we even do a couple of paddles. The class is truly a joy, and to top it off, we raffle the finished canoe off to one of the students.
