Phlebotomy Certification
This course is designed to prepare the student to be a skilled Phlebotomist in the health care industry. The student will receive extensive and varied program of study that includes theory and practice, specimen set-up and process, medical terminology specific to the laboratory, customer service skills, regulatory issues, venipuncture and fingerstick technique and numerous other collection procedures. After successfully completing this course and the phlebotomy internship, the student is eligible to apply and sit for the national AMT (American Medical Technologist) certification exam.

Requirements:
This is not an open enrollment offering. You must make a separate application to the program.
- This program is open to anyone that is 18 years of age or older.
- Complete Phlebotomy Application and return as indicated on the bottom of the application.
- Prerequisite: ENG 090 or ACCUPLACER scores for ENG 121
- Submit proof of prerequisite along with application. Unofficial transcripts will be sufficient.
- Application Deadlines: Fall Semester – June 1 and Spring Semester – November 1.
- Statement of Health Care Provider is required prior to internship.
- Successful passing of a criminal background check.
- Recommended but not required: an Anatomy and Physiology class and a Medical Terminology class
Courses:
First Semester:
- 4 credits HPR 112 001 (Theory) Class
- HPR 112 must be completed with a “C” or better to be eligible for the internship
Second Semester: (4 weeks)
- 3 credits HPR 180 501 (Clinicals) Internship -135hrs
- Sites and times will vary. You will need to be available 40 hours per week, hours will vary depending on whether a clinic or hospital site.

- Criminal Background Check/Immunizations
- Students will be required to complete and pass a criminal background check, ($59*) prior to starting their internships. Immunizations will also be required prior to starting internship. Registration and immunization information will be given in the classroom at the start of class. Students unable to complete these requirements will not be able to continue into the internship or finish the certificate.

• Certification Exam
- Scrubs need to be purchased for Internship. Please check with instructor on style and color of scrubs before purchasing.
- Lab coat (optional depending on internship location)
- Upon successful completion of the Phlebotomy course, students are responsible for contacting AMT to schedule testing for their national certification exam. AMT charges approximately $75* to take the test. Details will be discussed in class.
