Faculty Ranks

A faculty member may use the following titles:
  • Level I - Faculty, Assistant Professor, Teacher
  • Level II - Faculty, Associate Professor, Associate Master Teacher
  • Level III - Faculty, Professor, Master Teacher

Advancement: Faculty may apply for advancement during their final year in any level. Effective Fall 2008, in order to meet college catalog deadlines, Faculty Senate shall request applications for advancement early in the fall semester each year.  It is the individual faculty member’s responsibility to provide official verification to Faculty Senate along with the application.  The following outlines requirements for advancement from one level to another.

  • Level I - Faculty, Assistant Professor, Teacher
    • All newly hired faculty are placed in Level I.
  • Level II - Faculty, Associate Professor, Associate Master Teacher
    • After six years of service in Level I, a faculty member shall be eligible for advancement to Level II.
    • In order to gain advancement, the faculty member must demonstrate faculty evaluations of at least “commendable” in each of the three previous years. If using any evaluations prior to academic year 2013/14, one of the three years may have an evaluation rating of “meets expectations” but all others used must be “exceeds expectations” or above.
    • Regular faculty who have taught at Red Rocks Community College part time may substitute thirty credit hours taught at the college, while part time, for one year of service in Level I, up to a maximum of 60 credits/2 years.
    • A faculty member who is hired with an advanced degree (a degree beyond a required qualification) may count that achievement for one year of service in Level I.
    • A faculty member who earns an advanced degree while in Level I may count that achievement for one year of service.
    • A faculty member in a vocational area may request that significant certification or advancement within the particular field, which would be the equivalent of an advanced degree in an academic field, be counted for one year of service in Level I.  Substitution for advanced degrees will be granted at the discretion of Faculty Senate.
    • A faculty member may request that previous full-time college-level teaching experience count toward service in Level I, up to a maximum of two years.
    • A faculty member can only substitute up to three years of service. The faculty member must hold a full-time position at RRCC for a minimum of three years and have been granted non-provisional status before advancement to Level II will be considered.
  • Level III - Faculty, Professor, Associate Master Teacher
    • After six years of service in Level II, a faculty member shall be eligible for advancement to Level III.  Advancement to Level III may not occur without first advancing through Level II.
    • A faculty member who earns an advanced degree while in Level II may count that achievement for one year of service.
    • A faculty member in a vocational area may request that significant certification or advancement within the particular field while in Level II, which would be the equivalent of an advanced degree in an academic field, be counted for one year of service in Level II.  Substitution for advanced degrees will be granted at the discretion of Faculty Senate.
    • A faculty member may substitute advanced degrees or the equivalent for no more than two years of service.  The faculty member must remain in Level II for a minimum of four years before advancement to Level III will be considered.

A faculty member shall be entitled to continue using whatever rank they were entitled to use on the effective date of this policy.

While it is the faculty member’s responsibility to use the appropriate title, Faculty Senate shall authorize changes in rank for an individual faculty member after reviewing his/her eligibility for a higher rank.  The office of Human Resources shall retain all information that pertains to a faculty member’s years of service and a faculty member’s degrees, certificates, or other appropriate materials.
