Biographical works about an individual are kept with other books in the subject area with which that individual is associated. For example, biographies of Abraham Lincoln are kept with books of American history, biographies of Henry Ford are kept with business books, etc. Most biographies of a person can be found by performing a keyword search on the name of the person and the word biography. Some books about an individual may not be a biography of the person, but are about the activities or influence of the individual and might also have useful biographical information.     Major reference books in biography usually cover many people in an area such as American history, in a geographic area such as the world, an era such as the ancient world, or some combination of these and possibly other factors. Click on the a link below to see more information about the reference book listed. When you are in the web catalog you can change your search at the bottom of any title list or full record page.

    Biographies of people in various areas can be found in many online dictionaries and encyclopedias. Some examples of these are given below.
    * Britannica Online, which includes the online equivalent of the 30-volume Encyclopedia Britannica, contains many biographies. For example, see Britannica's biographical article on ** Martin Luther King.     * AccessScience, the online equivalent of the 20-volume McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, contains information many scientists. See the AccessScience ** Biographies area for guides to biographies by name and by field.     * Oxford Reference Online Premium is a collection of over 140 reference titles from Oxford University Press. Brief to moderately long biographies of individuals included in various Oxford titles can be found by searching all the works at the same time although some entries may only reference the person without giving biographical information. For example, a brief biography of Isambard Kingdom Brunel is included in the World Encyclopedia.     * Gale Virtual Reference Library includes two titles containing biographies of writers.
  • ** Contemporary Authors provides biographical and bibliographical information and references on more than 120,000 U.S. and international authors.
  • ** Contemporary Literary Criticism Select is a collection of critical essays on contemporary authors. Each CLC--Select entry contains a biographical/critical introduction, listing of principal works and sources for further study.

    Red Rocks Library * NetLibrary ebooks are listed in the Red Rocks web catalog by author, title, and subject. They can be identified by the term E-BOOK to the right of the title in a screen of titles. You can restrict a catalog search to ebooks by including the word ebook in a keyword search for subjects or names. Click on the appropriate link below to search the Red Rocks web catalog for ebooks containing biographies of one or many individuals.

    Once you have entered NetLibrary you can search the full text of all 14,500 ebooks by entering a name or a topic and selecting Full Text under the Basic Search window. Ebooks can be browsed online or can be checked out (reserved for your exclusive use) for 24 hours with a Red Rocks netLibrary account.     Print Periodicals

    The Red Rocks Library subscribes to about 300 newspapers, magazines, and journals that are kept on shelves in the periodicals areas. Although periodicals normally do not contain extensive biographical information, they sometimes have good descriptions of episodes in a person's life or career. Biographies of persons currently prominent in various fields can be found in:
    Current Biography (Ref. CT100 .C8) - Kept in Reference section. Monthly issues are compiled into an annual yearbook.

    Individual articles in print periodicals on individuals can be found by searching the library's EBSCO, ProQuest, and Elibrary online periodical databases under the name of the person. The online periodical indexes are listed under Subscription Services on the Online Services Guide. A complete list can be found at the Print Periodicals page.     The Red Rocks Library has the full text of over 8,000 newspapers, magazines, and journals in its online * EBSCO, * ProQuest, and * ELibrary periodical databases.     The Red Rocks Library has a limited number of biographical videos. Videos are listed in web catalog by title, subject, and words in summaries of videos. Videos can be identified by a call number in the form "VH-" or "DVD-" on the right side of the screen in a listing of titles. You can restrict a catalog search to videos by including the word videorecording in a keyword search.     Red Rocks Library videos cannot be checked out of the library by students but can be viewed in the library. You will need a student ID to leave at the circulation desk while you have the video.

  • Biography.com - Contains 25,000 biographies of notable people from antiquity to the present. The profiles range from one paragraph to several.
  • Biography-Center - An index to biographies freely available on the web.
  • Distinguished Women of Past and Present - Biographical information on notable women collected from sources all over the Internet.

  • BUBL Biographies - An extensive list maintained in the United Kingdom, but has worldwide coverage.

    Google Web Searches - Indexes over 8 billion web page, including many web pages about careers and occupations. Web pages may vary in quality. Since there are web pages specifically devoted to biographies of prominent people, try including the word biography in your search.
  • Search Google for pages on Rev. Jesse Jackson biography
    Google News Search - Indexes news stories from over 4,000 newspapers worldwide, including many stores about careers and occupations. Stories may stay available online for a fews days to a few weeks. Search Google News for a particular occupational area or other subject. Click on the below link to see examples of searching Google News for news about Rev. Jesse Jackson. Since the word biography would be unlikely to appear in a newspaper article, it's better to leave it out of the search.
