Geology Web Resources Geology Web Resources
DesertUSA: Desert Environment, Minerals, & Geology - Contains good descriptions of the American desert environment, major American deserts, and major minerals found in US desert regions. Also contains a good illustrated glossary of desert and desert geology terms. Also has links to DesertUSA sections on Animals & Wildlife, Plants/Wildflowers, and People & Cultures.
Geology: Plate Tectonics - Has a description of the mechanisms driving plate tectonics and animated files demonstrating the positions of the continents during various geologic time periods. There is also a history of plate tectonics theories, including information about Alfred Wegener and his theory of continental drift. From the University of California (Berkeley) Museum of Paleontology.
Illustrated Glossary of Alpine Glacial Landforms - Definitions and examples of common alpine glacial landforms, [erosional, depositional, and ice features] discussed in introductory level university physical geography, geology and earth science courses. Entries include definitions along with photographic examples (some with topographical maps).
National Earthquake Information Center - A virtual library on earthquakes - from the Earthquake Hazards Program, U.S. Geological Survey. Has historical as well as current earthquake information. Can get a list of recent earthquakes worldwide, data on the largest earthquakes, plate tectonics, animal behavior and earthquakes, tsunami information, magnitude scales, links to more sites, and other information.
Plant Fossil Record - A database of descriptions and occurrences of many thousands of extinct plants. Names, places and ages can be searched and the occurrences are plotted on a palaeogeographic map. Searchable or browsable by genera, descriptions, taxonomy, occurrences, and palaeo maps.
Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History: Paleobiology Department - Information and illustrations covering many aspects of paleobiology, including Burgess shale, dinosaur exhibits and extinction, forminifera, shark teeth key, brachiopods, and plants & algae.
This Dynamic Earth: The Story of Plate Tectonics - A good overview of the geological condition that is the primary cause of both earthquakes and volcanoes. An online version of the book by W. Jacquelyne Kious and Robert I. Tilling; originally published in 1996 by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Virtual Cave - Explore caves all over the world with an experienced caver and photographer, all "from the comfort of your keyboard." Image maps show cross sections of each type of cave and its unique features or speleothems. There's also a guide to U.S. caves open to the public.
Volcano Information Center (VIC) - Has many pictures plus a textbook-like description of the different types of volcanoes here. Includes links to individual sites detailing specific eruptions, and a list of volcanologists around the world.
Volcano World - A selection of information appropriate to a wide range of users. Sections cover currently erupting volcanoes and specific volcanoes (with a separate section on Mount St. Helens) and volcanic parks.
