LAKEWOOD, CO – In the spirit of recognizing the importance of diversity in our community, Red Rocks Community College will honor two leaders for demonstrating commitment to diversity and involvement in the community. The RRCC Diversity Council is accepting nominations for leaders in the community at large as well as from Red Rocks Community College. Nominations may be for an individual or an organization. The recipients will be recognized at the Celebration of Humanity event at Red Rocks Community College on February 18th, 2009. Click here to fill out an online form.
LAKEWOOD, CO – The artwork of Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) student Omhagain Dayeen will be showcased in a gallery opening reception Thursday, December 4, in the Lakewood campus library. Dayeen, a refugee from Western Sudan, is studying English as a second language and fine arts at RRCC while she completes requirements to earn her Ph.D. at University of Colorado. She describes her work as modern style, focusing on memories of tribal life back home. Dayeen’s exhibit features textile design with elements of painting, printing, water color, batik, and tie dye. “There came a time when my work was banned, but I believe in free expression,” said Dayeen. “The people of my home land Sudan have suffered greatly and I wish to bring recognition to their plight.” The free gallery reception includes refreshments and is open to the public. Dayeen’s art work will be on exhibit during the entire month of December and most of January.
It is with a great deal of pleasure that I announce the selection of Sherry Messina Dewald, PhD as RRCC’s Faculty of the Year! Sherry has made many positive contributions to Red Rocks and our students during her years at the College. Dr. Sherry Messina Dewald has been a full time faculty member for over 18 years at Red Rocks Community College. Aside from serving as the department chair of the Communication Studies program, she has been instrumental in coordinating and facilitating the first Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology program in the Colorado community college system.
Additionally, Dr. Dewald serves as the discipline co-chair for Communication courses in the state of Colorado. She serves on numerous boards and committees such as the Governing Board for the Rocky Mountain Communication Association, the Medical Assisting and Phlebotomy Advisory Board, the Academic Standards Committee and the Arvada Task Force. She teaches at the Red Rocks Community College Law Enforcement Academy, and coordinates the annual Red Rocks Community College Speech competition.
Eva Graziano, the faculty member who nominated Dr. Dewald for this award, stated in her nomination “Dr. Sherry Dewald is an outgoing and vibrant faculty member who truly cares about her students, her faculty and the community. She carries a very vigorous role throughout the college.”
Congratulations are also due to the other nominees, Jonas Mabey and Barbara Maher who also have made significant contributions to RRCC.Thanks to a very special committee that made all of this possible: Rita Stoffel, Peggy Burrus, Marjorie Berman, Elyse Fields, Art Gomez, and Craig Faulhaber.
Dr. Sherry Dewald, Faculty of the Year
LAKEWOOD, CO (November 10, 2008)– Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) will host opening night for a High School Art Show & Scholarship Awards Contest this Friday, November 14, 2008 in the Community Room of their Lakewood campus. The catered event begins at 6 p.m. with an art show, live music, and juried prizes and will end with a ceremony at 8 p.m. where 10 RRCC scholarships will be awarded.
LAKEWOOD, CO (November 6, 2008)–In honor of Veterans Day, Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) will host a day-long celebration on Tuesday, November 11 which will include a fly over from the Colorado Air National Guard’s120th Fighter Squadron from Buckley Air Force Base at 11:30 a.m. The celebration, open to RRCC students, staff and the entire community, will commence at 9 a.m. at the Lakewood campus with an honor guard flag-raising ceremony and welcome message from Red Rocks president Dr. Michele Haney.
LANSDOWNE, VA (November 3, 2008)– The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has opened the nominations process for the largest scholarships available to students and recent alumni from community colleges. Through the initiative, called the Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship Program, the private foundation will award up to $30,000 annually per recipient to help students and recent alumni from community and two-year institutions pursue four-year degrees at any accredited college or university in the United States and abroad. Last year, the Foundation received over 600 nominations for these awards.
LAKEWOOD, CO (October 29, 2008) – The Red Rocks Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of two-year colleges, has welcomed seventy-three new members this semester.
In 2007, Alpha Kappa Sigma, RRCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, was recognized as one of the society’s top 25 chapters internationally. Also in 2007, the chapter received the Most Distinguished Chapter recognition out of 23 chapters in the state of Colorado and earned Five Star chapter status for the 10th consecutive year. The RRCC chapter is committed to the International Service Program: Keep America Beautiful as well as continuing the Fight Against Cancer.
LAKEWOOD, CO (October 27, 2008 )– Red Rocks Community College’s Emergency and Public Safety Department and the Office of Student Employment and Internship Services will be hosting an Emergency Services Job Fair, Thursday November 13 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm at RRCC’s Lakewood Campus, located at 13300 W. Sixth Ave.
The job fair will offer a professional networking opportunity for emergency services students, graduates, and community job seekers while helping participating police and fire departments, parks services, criminal justice agencies, emergency management agencies and ambulance services with their recruiting efforts.
Grainger Partners with Red Rocks Community College to Address Shortage of Skilled Workers in Colorado Grainger’s Tools for Tomorrow SM Scholarship Program Supports Future Leaders in Industrial Trades
LAKEWOOD, CO. (Sept. 25, 2008) – With baby boomers retiring from the ranks of the skilled trade workforce in Colorado and across the country, a growing number of labor experts predict a shortage of trained industrial workers in fields such as welding, electrical, plumbing and construction management. To aid this need, Grainger, a local distributor of facilities maintenance supplies, awarded a Tools for Tomorrow scholarship to Red Rocks Community College student Joe McInerney during a presentation on campus September 18.
Red Rocks Faculty Elected to Partners of the Americas Board
LAKEWOOD, CO (August 21, 2008)– Red Rocks Community College adjunct faculty Dr. Francis Wardle has been elected to the international board of Partners of the Americas, a nonprofit organization that develops leadership, understanding, and opportunity throughout the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean through social, economic, educational, and cultural development. The program was created by John F. Kennedy in 1963 as the Alliance for Progress.
Red Rocks’ Ninth Physician Assistant Class Graduates

Red Rocks Community College Faculty Named Theatre Educator of the Year
LAKEWOOD, CO (July 21 2008)– Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) faculty member Pamela Jamruszka Mencher has been chosen by the Alliance for Colorado Theatre (ACT) as the 2008 Colorado Higher Education Theatre Educator of the Year. A professional organization for theatre educators, ACT recognizes instructors for their outstanding achievements in theatre education and within the community at large.
