RRCC Students Nominated to All-USA Academic Team

LAKEWOOD, CO – Red Rocks Community College students Dylan Stone and Kayla Jensen are 2008 nominees for the prestigious All-USA Academic Team, which recognizes outstanding students at two-year colleges around the country. Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for students at two-year colleges, selects the team.

As a result of their nomination to the national team, Jensen and Stone are also automatically members of the All-Colorado Academic Team. Members of that team will be recognized at a luncheon in March, attended by state officials and legislators.

Stone and Jensen were among outstanding Red Rocks students nominated by the college’s faculty and staff. Former Red Rocks President Cliff Richards selected the two nominees.

Nominees to the All-USA Academic Team demonstrate academic excellence, intellectual rigor, civic involvement and improvement through education. They must earn at least a 3.25 grade point average (Jensen and Stone both have a 4.0 GPA) and be eligible to graduate with an associate degree. The 60 team members are selected from about 1,200 nominees nationwide. They will be announced in early April and be covered in USA Today.

Stone, a pre-engineering student who graduate this semester and plans to earn a BA and master’s degree from the University of Colorado, said, “It’s a tremendous honor. I feel really fortunate that I can be in an environment where I can try hard and have it be received well and supported.”

“I feel very privileged. It’s nice to feel like your hard work has paid off and its been worth it,” said Jensen, who is completing an associate’s degree at Red Rocks and plans to earn a degree in nutrition from Colorado State University.

Both nominees hold perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Jensen, who says she has “kind of an overachiever streak,” earned honors during high school and worked with Americorps during a gap year before starting at Red Rocks. Stone, a dedicated rock musician, dropped out of high school, earned a G.E.D. and supported himself with a series of jobs before starting at Red Rocks, where he has excelled.
