RRCC celebrates the Week of the Young Child

LAKEWOOD, CO – Red Rocks Community College celebrated the Week of the Young Child with educational and fun events, a children’s art show and a collection of paper dolls representing real children in need of advocacy that will be on display in public places, including the state capitol.

The Week of the Young Child is sponsored each year by the National Association of Education for Young Children. The Red Rocks Community College celebration was hosted by the Early Childhood Education program at the Lakewood Campus, 13300 W. Sixth Ave. In conjunction with the event, Lakewood Mayor Bob Murphy officially proclaimed this the  Week of the Young Child in Lakewood.

Workshops at the free, public event included sign language for parents and their young children, the differences between the brains of boys and girls, art and crafts projects with young children, using puppetry to communicate with emotional preschoolers and documenting a child’s growth and development.

In a special project, Red Rocks students were invited to write about the life of a child in need of advocacy for issues like child care, disability, health care or hunger and to create an “advocacy doll” illustrating that child’s needs. The Colorado Children’s Campaign provided the large paper dolls; 50 dolls were created and taken to various public sites around the metro area such as grocery stores, churches and gas stations. Ten of the most poignant stories will be on display at the state capitol in the East Wing to remind legislators and the public of the needs of children. RRCC students Jamie Owens, Ivy Freeman, Carla Rigli and Jeanne Marie Soniat coordinated the activity.

Kathleen DeVries, coordinator of RRCC Early Childhood Education, was coordinator of the week’s activities. Early Childhood Education offers certificates in Preschool Group Leader, Infant/Toddler Group Leader and Director Early Childhood Education. Students can also earn associate of arts and associate of applied science degrees. For more information visit www.rrcc.edu/ece/ or call 303-914-6326.
