Two RRCC Students Named to PTK All-Colorado Academic Team
LAKEWOOD, CO –Red Rocks Community College students Vinh-Thuy Nguyen and Rita Erickson were selected for the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Colorado Academic Team for 2011. Each year, the PTK honor society recognizes outstanding students at two-year colleges around the state.
Vinh-Thuy Nguyen is a biology student who maintains a 4.0 GPA while tutoring others in his field of study. He is Dr. Steven Kaye's teaching assistant for General College Biology II; a teaching assistant for Susan Kowalski’s General College Biology I, and a Biology tutor at RRCC's Learning Commons. Nguyen plans to transfer to either Oregon State University or Colorado State University after spring semester 2012 to pursue a B.S. in Biochemistry. His tentative plan is to continue his studies by earning a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
Outside of school, Nguyen is a MedVantage Intern and volunteer at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center's Infusion Care Center and Oncology Pharmacy. He also volunteers as a Vietnamese language tutor for foreign-exchange students and recently immigrated students. Nguyen loves the outdoors and his hobbies include tennis, biking, and hiking.
Phi Theta Kappa member Rita Erickson is proof that one can find success and second chances through school. A rough childhood and a series of poor choices were leading her down the wrong path, but Erickson found support and camaraderie through RRCC’s Gateway program. She is now a hardworking student and dedicated mom, described by faculty as upbeat, enthusiastic, and very positive. Erickson said, “Building a better me and inspiring others to do the same has been my biggest accomplishment since attending school.”
Erickson is a work study in the Computer Technology Department for Christie Burton and also a Floral Designer at Albertson's. She plans to attend Regis University for a B.S. in Business Administration; and may pursue an MBA after that. When not studying or working, Erickson enjoys time with her two-year old daughter.
Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society for two-year colleges.
