LAKEWOOD, CO – Each year the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and USA Today sponsor the All-Academic Team competition designed to honor some of the country’s top degree-seeking community college students. The top twenty students receive a $2,500 cash stipend and are recognized at the annual AACC convention. Additionally, the Coca-Cola Foundation will recognize 150 students as New Century Scholars with scholarships ranging from $1,000-$2,000.
Students nominated to the All-Academic Team are automatically named to the Colorado All-Academic Team and are recognized at a legislator’s luncheon in March. The program seeks to honor students who are not only universally excellent, but also represent the range of student found on American community college campuses. Each college many nominate only two students. The judging criteria are designed to find students who:
Excel academically (minimum 3.5 GPA, degree-seeking)
Demonstrate intellectual rigor in their course of study
Demonstrate academic/leadership/civic growth
Use their two-year college education to better themselves, their schools and their communities
Student must have a minimum of 36 credit hours completed by December 2011
Student must be enrolled at least part-time at a two-year or four-year college for the fall 2012 semester
Students need not be members of Phi Theta Kappa to be eligible.
I am asking for your help in identifying students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership or who have made lasting contributions to our campus and/or community. The application process is rigorous and centers on a 500 word essay. The focal point of the essay should be one endeavor undertaken by the student that utilized his or her community college education to improve his or her community or school. Judges look for innovative, creative, original and lasting achievements or undertakings. Nominees must be committed to completing the lengthy application and essay.
Please forward names to firstname.lastname@example.org, along with a brief description of the student’s accomplishments, by Friday, October 14th. Michele Haney will select the final two nominees to represent the college.
Thank you for your help!
