Red Rocks Foundation Board recognizes excellent faculty
Math dept. head Heather Duncan lauded with
Student Voice Endowed Teaching Chair award
LAKEWOOD, CO – Heather Duncan has been selected as the 2012-2014 Student Voice Endowed Teaching Chair. The RRCC Foundation Teaching Chair program, the only multi-year faculty award in the Colorado Community College System, is a meaningful way of recognizing and awarding outstanding faculty. The Mike Leprino Family Foundation and Coors Brewing Company endowed the first two chairs in 2001.
Duncan became full-time Red Rocks faculty in 2002 and has chaired the math department since last year. Her philosophy of teaching includes the belief that math should be “challenging, understandable AND fun.” She incorporates her philosophy into her courses by using technology in every lesson, makes math relevant by using examples from everyday life to teach a concept, and gets to know her students so she can make sure she is reaching each one.
Duncan shared that, “The Endowed Teaching Chair is a special award; and unless you’ve actually applied for it, you don’t realize what a stressful and difficult process it is. We have amazing faculty here at RRCC, so to be chosen as the recipient from among that group is humbling.”
Recipients of a RRCC Teaching Chair Award are selected from full-time faculty following a portfolio review and initial screening by a panel of faculty representatives. The panel then forwards a list of finalists to the RRCC Foundation Board of Directors for final selection. Each recipient is awarded a three-year salary enhancement of $5,000 per year in addition to $2,500 per year for professional development.
The Foundation Board Selection Committee noted how impressed they were with the quality of this year’s presentations and how difficult it was to make a final selection and extends a tremendous compliment to all finalists: Heather Duncan, Wendy Bird, and Craig Faulhaber.
The Foundation Board would also like to congratulate Christie Burton, Berndt Savig, and Sally Stablein, who were also nominated for the award and presented before the faculty committee.
