RRCC’s PTK Honor Society Earns International Recognition
LAKEWOOD, CO – The Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Sigma, returned from an international convention in Nashville this past month with an armful of recognition. From the nearly 1300 chapters worldwide, Alpha Kappa Sigma was recognized in the top 100. Additionally, they received Distinguished Officer Team (Corissa Bowman, Sara Holden, Lori Ebenhack), Distinguished Chapter Officer, (Corissa Bowman) and Distinguished Advisor (Carolyn Mattern) awards.
“We are honored to receive this recognition,” said Mattern, Advisor for RRCC’s chapter. “These achievements demonstrate the dedication and leadership of our students, who not only excel in academics, but are committed to serving our community.”
In addition to the above distinctions, the Colorado region received a Milestone Award for the collective work of all the chapters in the state.
The awards were based on each chapter’s work during the previous year in the society’s Hallmark categories of service, leadership, and scholarship. The RRCC chapter was recognized for their work on “Complete What you Started” a collaboration with the Advising department that encouraged students to complete their degrees/certificates, apply to graduate, and run a Degree Check. The chapter’s other major project was a student retention study that incorporated extensive research and surveys of staff, students, and former students. Additionally, Alpha Kappa Sigma organized a successful Relay for Life team, Constitution Day activities, and participated in Money Matters, 9 Health Fair, and Trick or Treat on the Rocks.
Red Rocks Community College welcomed 165 new students into Alpha Kappa Sigma this spring, a record number of inductees.
