Red Rocks PTK Honor Society Earns International Recognition

LAKEWOOD, CO – The Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Sigma, returned from an international convention in San Jose, CA last month with a number of distinguished awards. Chapter President Rita Erickson, Vice-President Robert White, and Vice-President Cody Oldham were recognized as a Distinguished Chapter Officer Team at the Phi Theta Kappa International Hallmark Awards Gala. Erickson also received the individual award of Distinguished Chapter Officer.

“I’m so proud of this team,” said Carolyn Mattern, Advisor for RRCC’s chapter. “These achievements demonstrate the dedication and leadership of our students, who not only excel in academics, but are committed to serving our community.”

Regional recognition included:

-Five Star Chapter Award, which recognizes a chapter’s progress from local campus
involvement to regional involvement to international involvement
-President Rita Erickson was recognized by the region and received The Distinguished Chapter Officer Award.
-First Place for College Project "The Wellness Initiative" which included a smoking cessation program
-First Place for exploring the theme of Psychology as part of the Honors in Action Project
-Third Place in the region for Honors In Action Project, "Rock Stars," which recognized the diversity of our student body and showcased their accomplishments

“It’s an honor to be a part of such a great organization,” said chapter president Rita Erickson. “It has given me leadership opportunities that I would not have access to otherwise.”

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society for two-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa’s mission is to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students, and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service, and fellowship programs. Membership into Phi Theta Kappa is by invitation, extended only to students who meet eligibility requirements. Founded in 1918, there are 1400 chapters worldwide.
