RRCC Awarded $500K Grant from NSF for Cyber Security Program

Lakewood, CO - Red Rocks Community College’s Computer Technology Department was awarded $589,843 from the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (S-STEM). The 5-year grant will increase the number of highly trained cyber security professionals entering the workforce by providing need-based scholarships to academically talented students pursuing associate degrees or transfer to a four-year institution in the field of cyber security.

“Having received an award from this highly competitive NSF program is very exciting,” said Dr. Michele Haney, RRCC President. “It speaks to the strength of our Computer Technology Department at the college and the quality of education that we can provide students interested in entering cutting-edge fields like cyber security.”

The Cyber Security Scholarship Program (CSSP) made possible through the grant will encourage students to complete their associate degree in two-years. The scholarship includes financial and academic support companioned with activities designed to engage students with professionals in the cyber security industry. The scholarship program will be open to all interested students with targeted recruitment efforts toward women and minorities, both of whom are underrepresented in the cyber security field. The first cohort of awardees will begin in fall 2014. The program will award a total of 34 scholarships, with each cohort ranging from 10 to 12 students.

“The Computer Technology faculty is eager to provide students with the opportunity to pursue an education in the cyber security field,” said Christie Burton, Computer Technology Faculty and CSSP Project Director. “Many of our students struggle to stay in college while they are working and taking care of family responsibilities. The scholarships will allow the students to focus on their education so they are well prepared to enter the workforce.”

The Computer Technology Department offers degrees and certificates in cyber security, office administration, programming, web development, database administration, networking and computer support. To ensure that students have access to state-of-the-art technology, the department partners with Microsoft IT Academy, Oracle, Comptia, and Cisco Academy. Courses are developed in alignment with the current needs of industry so that upon graduation, students are highly qualified to enter the workforce.
