Red Rocks PTK Honor Society to hold holiday gift drive for charity
Donations to benefit Family Tree, Toys for Tots and Catholic Charities of Denver
LAKEWOOD, CO – The Red Rocks Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society will hold a gift drive to benefit three local charities November 18-21, 2013. Family Tree, Toys for Tots, and Catholic Charities of Denver will be the benefactors of the drive, which kicks off with refreshments and music on Monday, November 18 at 10 a.m. on The Bridge at RRCC’s Lakewood campus. Donations will be collected at the college’s Arvada campus on November 19. In addition to unwrapped toys, donations of clothing, food, gift cards, and cash are welcome at both locations.
The gift drive is a class project of the PTK Honors in Action class, which is made up of honor society scholarship recipients who are studying the culture of competition. The goal of the class study is to determine how has competition shaped history and how will competition shape the future? In addition to assisting worthy charities during the holidays, the class will survey donors on charity support, seeking to answer such questions as what compels people to give, how one chooses which charity to support, and ultimately how competition for donor dollars will shape charities in the future. The results of the study will be submitted to a national PTK contest. The RRCC chapter has won both regional and national awards in the past for their Honors in Action projects.
PTK President Cody Oldham further explained the project. “We are excited about our holiday drive. Not only will proceeds benefit some very deserving organizations, it gives our class experience in organizing a large event and a chance to hone our leadership skills.”
The kick-off celebration will include participation from RRCC’s Children’s Center. The children and staff of the center will donate nonperishable food, help decorate the college’s "giving tree" and hang artwork that they've made reflecting Thanksgiving.
“Family Tree is thrilled to partner with Red Rocks Community College for holiday giving efforts,” said Jaclyn Wilmot, Director of Volunteer Services. “Our mission is to help people overcome child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness to become safe, strong and self-reliant. With the help of Red Rocks Community College, we can brighten the holidays for many children and families.”
Toys for Tots, a 65-year charitable program run by the U.S. Marine Corps, provides toys and gifts to disadvantaged children during each Christmas holiday season. The items collected and distributed by the Marines offer children recognition, confidence and a positive holiday memory.
Tracy Murphy, Communications Associate with Catholic Charities said, "The proceeds of this event will provide invaluable support to our mission, which serves over 50,000 men, women and children in need throughout northern Colorado. We are deeply inspired by the generous and creative spirit motivating these students in their efforts, and we are honored to partner with them in this endeavor."
