Governor Declares Nov. 22 as Community College Completion Day
LAKEWOOD, CO – The national spotlight has been focused on community college colleges in recent weeks is not the norm, but it is timely for families and the nation. As the current economic recession drags on and unemployment remains frustratingly high, the issue of jobs tops everyone’s worry list. Economic malaise has also driven an ongoing enrollment surge at the nation’s community colleges – an increase of almost 17% nationally.
Red Rocks PTK Honor Society to hold holiday gift drive for charity
Donations to benefit Family Tree, Toys for Tots and Catholic Charities of Denver
LAKEWOOD, CO – The Red Rocks Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society will hold a gift drive to benefit three local charities November 18-21, 2013. Family Tree, Toys for Tots, and Catholic Charities of Denver will be the benefactors of the drive, which kicks off with refreshments and music on Monday, November 18 at 10 a.m. on The Bridge at RRCC’s Lakewood campus. Donations will be collected at the college’s Arvada campus on November 19. In addition to unwrapped toys, donations of clothing, food, gift cards, and cash are welcome at both locations.
RRCC Presents Gudy Gaskill: Stories from the Silk Road and Beyond
Lakewood, CO – Denver artist Gudy Gaskill will be sharing the stories of her travels and adventures on Thursday, November 14, from 3 to 5 pm at the Red Rocks Community College Library, Lakewood Campus. During her travels and hiking she has always carried her watercolor supplies and painted plein air paintings creating with each painting a story of a time, place and a moment that has been captured....more
Red Rocks Inducts 151 Students into PTK Honor Society
Lakewood, CO -- RRCC students continued their tradition of excellence as their honor society welcomed 151 new members at an October 16 ceremony on the Lakewood campus. Family and friends watched the official ceremony as students were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). The new members recited a pledge of continuing excellence and several 4.0 GPA inductees were recognized for their outstanding academic performance.

RRCC Announces Regis University Transfer Scholarship Winners
Regis supports community college students pursuing four-year degrees
LAKEWOOD, CO -- Regis University College for Professional Studies continued their tradition of supporting community colleges last month, awarding several Red Rocks Community College students scholarships. Those selected in the 2013-2014 scholarship cycle were exceptional students who met the requirements for a Regis scholarship and wish to pursue a four-year degree at the private university.

Dr. Michele Haney among finalists for "Outstanding Women in Business" award
LAKEWOOD, CO -- Dr. Michele Haney, president of Red Rocks Community College, was among this year's honorees at the Denver Business Journal’s Outstanding Women in Business and was recognized at a luncheon in August. The award honors local women for their accomplishments in their field of work; as well as their lifetime achievements.
RRCC Awarded $500K Grant from NSF for Cyber Security Program
Lakewood, CO - Red Rocks Community College’s Computer Technology Department was awarded $589,843 from the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (S-STEM). The 5-year grant will increase the number of highly trained cyber security professionals entering the workforce by providing need-based scholarships to academically talented students pursuing associate degrees or transfer to a four-year institution in the field of cyber security.
State-of-the-Art facility hosts Water Quality Management Program
LAKEWOOD, CO – Red Rocks Community College is hosting a grand opening of its new Environmental Training Center. The rescheduled grand opening of the center is set for October 12, from 10 am to Noon (weather permitting). The community is invited to join us for the welcome/ribbing-cutting ceremony, tours of the completed construction and mobile lab, and free refreshments.
RRCC Hosts Looking Beyond Art Exhibit :: Featuing work of Gudy Gaskill, Anne Argent and Tracey Barnes
LAKEWOOD, CO – Paintings, prints and ceramics are the focus of Looking Beyond, an exhibit featuring the work of Colorado artists Gudy Gaskill, Anne Argent and Tracey Barnes, on display until August 9 in the Susan K. Arndt Gallery at Red Rocks Community College’s Lakewood campus.
Red Rocks sponsors team to build sand sculpture in Arvada
Red Rocks Community College recently participated in Sand in the City®, a sand sculpting contest and festival hosted by the Arvada Chamber of Commerce. The event was held June 14 and 15 on the lawn south of the Arvada Center at 68th and Wadsworth.
The Red Rocks team of 20, led by college president Dr. Michele Haney, included RRCC faculty, staff, students, plus some friends and family. The RRCC Foundation paid the contest entry fee and also funded supplies that were needed. The team competed against nine other local teams to build their sculpture--a giant RRCC logo. Although the team had no previous experience sculpting sand, participants were able to attend a ‘Sand 101’ orientation and a hands-on sculpting training. In addition, the teams were assigned an architect to help design and guide the project.
Red Rocks Community College Celebrates 3rd Annual Powwow :: Sponsored by Jeffco Public Schools, RRCC and CSM
LAKEWOOD, CO -- The Red Rocks Community College Pavilion, located on the east-end of the college’s Lakewood Campus, will be alive with the color, beauty and spirit of the Native American culture this coming weekend. On Sunday, May 26 the 3rd Annual RRCC Powwow opens to the public at 12 p.m. and admission is free of charge. (Recent RRCC Alumni are welcome to a free meal honoring graduates from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.) Organized events and vendors will entertain and educate visitors of all ages; competitive dancing begins in the early afternoon.
RRCC Recognizes Outstanding Students and Faculty at Commencement 2013
LAKEWOOD, CO -- Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) presented nearly 1,200 degrees and certificates at the college’s 43rd annual commencement ceremony at the Lakewood campus on Saturday, May 18. RRCC granted Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, Associate of Applied Science, and Associate of General Studies degrees, plus certificates in hundreds of fields from Accounting to Water Quality.
Red Rocks Foundation Board recognizes excellent faculty :: Business Department Chair Wendy Bird lauded with Endowed Teaching Chair award
LAKEWOOD, CO -- Wendy Bird has been selected as the 2013-2015 Mike Leprino Family Foundation Endowed Teaching Chair. The RRCC Foundation Teaching Chair program, the only multi-year faculty award in the Colorado Community College System, is a meaningful way of recognizing and awarding outstanding faculty. The Mike Leprino Family Foundation and Coors Brewing Company endowed the first two chairs in 2001.
Red Rocks PTK Honor Society Earns International Recognition
LAKEWOOD, CO – The Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Sigma, returned from an international convention in San Jose, CA last month with a number of distinguished awards. Chapter President Rita Erickson, Vice-President Robert White, and Vice-President Cody Oldham were recognized as a Distinguished Chapter Officer Team at the Phi Theta Kappa International Hallmark Awards Gala. Erickson also received the individual award of Distinguished Chapter Officer.

Lakewood, CO – Red Rocks Community College’s Emergency and Public Safety Department and Outdoor Education Department will host a career fair on Tuesday, April 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the RRCC Lakewood campus. Police and fire departments, emergency management agencies, ambulance, and outdoor education & recreation services will come together to present employment opportunities to students and graduates from programs such as Fire Science Technology, Law Enforcement Academy, Emergency Management and Planning, Emergency Medical Services, Park Ranger Technology, and Outdoor Education.
RRCC hosts Japanese exchange students
International students learn English while enriching their cultural experience
Lakewood, CO – Red Rocks Community College hosted one teacher and 11 students in a study abroad program from Tsuruoka, a city in the Shonai region of the Yamagata prefecture of Japan. During the two weeks, students stayed with host families, improved their language skills, took classes at RRCC and went on excursions around the Denver metro area and the Colorado Mountains to get a sense of the culture and scenery.

Own Your Own Health: ATTEND 9HEALTH FAIR THIS SPRING
Lakewood, CO – On April 13, 2013, Red Rocks Community College is partnering with 9Health Fair to present more than 20 free and four low-cost health screenings, as well as education, for people to keep their health in check. 9Health Fair, Colorado’s largest volunteer-run, non-profit health fair program, is urging anyone over 18 to attend. More than 150 communities throughout Colorado and Wyoming will host a 9Health Fair. Seeking applicants for US-BRAZIL Connect Internship Program
Lakewood, CO – Red Rocks Community College is accepting applications for RRCC students who will travel to Brazil for a four-week sponsored internship in June 2013. The program, launched in June 2012, creates life-changing opportunities for U.S. students to participate in intensive internships in Brazil, which is now the sixth largest economy in the world.
RRCC Completes HVAC Lab Remodel and Upgrade:: New lab enables a safer and more efficient learning environment
Lakewood-Last month Red Rocks Community College recently completed a comprehensive upgrade to the learning lab for their Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program, making the facility the most advanced HVAC lab in the region. The upgrade was funded by the college’s Rocky Mountain Education Center (RMEC), which offers non-credit workforce development and training. Renovations will enable RMEC to offer the current workforce an energy-efficient program while simultaneously improving the quality of RRCC’s degree program in this field.
Auditions for Scars: Breaking the Cycle :: Performance presented by Red Rocks Community College Theatre Arts and Dance
Lakewood-The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at Red Rocks Community College proudly announces auditions for the spring production of Scars: Breaking the Cycle by Connie Sander and Pamela Mencher based on the writing of students of the RRCC Gateway Program.
This unique theatre production is based on real-life experiences of Red Rocks Community College Gateway Program students. Based upon these writings, this ensemble-based theatre production recreates and narrates these tragic events and the ‘scars’ that are left behind. The play contains adult language and mature content.
