Red Rocks Community College focuses on International and Peace Studies

Lakewood, CO —Red Rocks Community College will offer a course entitled African Studies: Conflict, Security, and Development in Africa, Spring Semester 2015. Dr. Sylvester Maphosa, Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence awardee, will serve as the faculty teaching this Special Topics course beginning January 23 through May 8, 2015.  This course is a contemporary overview and analysis of issues surrounding security and development in Africa, and how these manifest themselves in the wider global context. The course will meet every Friday, 09:00 am – 11:45 am and is open to the community. Registration for the Spring Semester 2015 is underway online at www.rrcc.edu at RRCC Campus, 13300 W. Sixth Avenue, Lakewood, CO.

Red Rocks Community College International Student Services and Programs will continue to host Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence 2014-2015, Dr. Sylvester Maphosa. Dr. Maphosa is Chief Research Specialist and Head of Governance and Security at the Human Science Research Council (HSRC) Africa Institute of South Africa Program, in Pretoria, South Africa. He holds a Ph.D. in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from the University KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and a M.A. in Peace and Governance from the institute of Peace, Leadership and Governance at Africa University, Zimbabwe. Dr. Maphosa has more than 15 years of professional experience and extensive knowledge of politics and society in Africa with significant field experience in research, community-based peace building entrepreneurship, higher education, and non-government work. He is a peace building participant, monitoring, evaluating, and learning expert who has worked across violently divided and multi-cultural environments. He is the author and editor of numerous scholarly articles and books including Building Peace from Within: An Examination of Community-based Peacebuilding in Africa.

Red Rocks Community College International Student Services and Programs will continue to focus on the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence 2014-2015 program and partner with University of Colorado Boulder to advance our global presence, internationalize our curriculum, and diversify the educational experiences of our students, and community through Study Abroad Programs. The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence program, is managed and funded by the United States Department of State Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs. International Student Services and Programs Department provides services, ESL language programs and support for international students. Everyone is invited to participate in programs that include International Café, Global Topics Panels, Speakers Bureau, Community Building Seminars, and English Language Civics (EL/Civics).
