Red Rocks Community College provides a fun reboot on Fresh Check Day

Lakewood, CO - Red Rocks Community College held their first Fresh Check Day - an uplifting mental health promotion and suicide prevention event - on April 26 on the south lawn of the Lakewood campus.

Fresh Check Day, a program created by the Jordan Porco Foundation, includes interactive expo booths, peer-to-peer messaging, free food, entertainment, and giveaways. Over 350 students, faculty, and staff attended the event to race on a giant inflatable obstacle course and visit stations to pot pansies, craft aromatherapy bath salts, or pop bubble wrap!  In addition to providing a day to relax and play, Fresh Check Day aims to create an approachable atmosphere where students are encouraged to engage in dialogue about mental health and build a bridge between students and the mental health resources available.

“Fresh Check Day was an enormous success,” said Emma Griffis, RRCC’s Suicide Prevention Project Coordinator. “Not only did it help students de-stress, connect them to resources, and give them some time during finals to have fun, but it also encouraged students to open up about mental health. It was great to see how the College’s students and staff came together to ensure that Fresh Check Day was a great event.”

RRCC takes suicide prevention seriously. Approximately one out of 10 college students nationwide contemplates suicide. That leaves nine, given the resources, to reach out and help that one friend who may be struggling. Fresh Check Day allowed the College to provide those resources both to students who are having a hard time and to students who would like to support their friends.

Student Marika Fama, who helped coordinate the event, said, “It reminded me that Red Rocks cares about everyone here and is continuously working to create a positive, welcoming, and nurturing environment. Throughout the day, many individuals approached me to commend the committee for the work we did to organize the event. One student even said, ‘thank you… I really needed this.’ That was an impactful statement, and I’m glad we were able to help someone get the help and encouragement that they needed.”
