RMEC receives $155,000 grant from US Dept. of Labor

Grant to fund ‘training of trainers’ in fall prevention on construction sites

Lakewood, CO – Rocky Mountain Education Center (RMEC), the continuing education division of Red Rocks Community College, has been selected to receive a new grant award from the US DOL Susan Harwood Grant Program. The grant will fund RMEC’s one-day experiential training program to support those tasked with training their workers in how to prevent injuries from falls on construction sites. RMEC will develop the curriculum in both English and Spanish. RMEC has partnered with the North Dakota Safety Council and will offer the one-day training at no cost to construction companies throughout the Rocky Mountain States of Colorado, Utah, Montana, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming. RMEC has also received approval to offer the training program in Texas and Arkansas.

“Falls in construction continue to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting for injuries and deaths on the job,” said Joan Smith, Executive Director of RMEC. “We are pleased to once again have the opportunity through the OSHA Susan Harwood Grant Program to provide no-cost training to employees that are responsible for training their companies workers in fall prevention and use of fall arrest equipment. Being effective in conducting this type of training requires knowledge in teaching techniques that begin in understanding how adults learn.”
