Rocky Mountain Education Center Launches Ready2Work Academy
Helping employers meet the oncoming “gray tsunami”

LAKEWOOD, CO – Red Rocks Community College’s Continuing Education Division, Rocky Mountain Education Center (RMEC) has partnered with employers to meet the oncoming “gray tsunami,” the industry term for the pending retirement of more than 50 percent of their current workforce. RMEC is leveraging the resources offered by a newly renovated HVAC lab at Red Rocks Community College. Their Ready2 Work Academy, which follows a “boot camp” model, was developed in concert with employers from the building maintenance and energy efficiency industries. The Ready2 Work Academy offers 80 hours of hands-on basics resulting in work ready certifications in EPA 608 Universal Card and the OSHA 10 hour General Industry Card. Students completing the program are given priority preference to interview for internships among the employer sponsors.

Earlier this month Rob Moreno, General Manager of Operations for Simple Home Energy Solutions, hired two Ready2Work graduates, Ken Boettcher and Russell Diedrich. Simple Home Energy Solutions is part of the Xcel Energy Tradesman List and Xcel Energy’s Top 10 Home Performance contractors with Energy Star Program, finishing 7th in the Front Range.

Ken Boettcher is a young father and college graduate. While he loved making a difference among underserved populations in his career in social work, his passion remained in working with his hands and making things work better. The Ready2 Work Academy with its full ride scholarship and classes scheduled around students’ availability appealed to Ken. Within one week of finishing the Ready2 Work program Ken is starting with Simple Home Energy Solutions as the new Regional Operations Manager. After two days on the job, Ken wrote, “This is the most fun I have ever had at work…this is me!”

Russell Diedrich is a veteran who served with the Marines, deployed on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard USS Bonhomme. Russell made ports of call in Japan, Australia, and Hong Kong. Russell is continuing his studies at Red Rocks, and is thrilled to be part of the Simple Home Energy Solutions team. His new job is working with his school schedule to ensure Russell achieves his goal of graduation.
