Red Rocks Community College Receives Grant to Fund the IDEA Lab
Grant Helps Community College Students Succeed in STEM

Lakewood, CO - Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) announced today it has received a $15,000 grant from Xcel Energy to fund hands-on STEM learning in RRCC’s new IDEA Lab.

“Improving the retention and success of community college students in STEM is critical for our workforce and economy,” said Elizabeth Cox, Director of Red Rocks Innovations in STEM Education (RISE). “We are grateful for this support from Xcel Energy to help us create a new kind of learning environment where our STEM students on the engineering pathway gain experience in open-ended problem solving as wells as skills in innovation.”  In the IDEA Lab, students work collaboratively on real-world technical design challenges. The IDEA Lab provides workshops on engineering design, clinics on 3-D printing, technical mentoring on project ideas and assistance finding resources to develop project ideas.

RISE is charged with incubating and launching transformative innovations in STEM education at RRCC through initiatives that focus on broadening participation, improving retention and engagement, and enhancing academic performance.

Xcel Energy’s grant is part of the company’s corporate giving Education focus area, which supports nonprofit organizations like RISE that improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.
