New This Year!
We are pleased to announce a new partnership between Red Rocks Community College Theatre Arts and Dance Department and nationally renowned Curious Theatre Company in producing the fourth Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region in 2009. Since its inception in 1987, Red Rocks’ theatre production program has supported the development and production of new plays and playwrights. Curious Theatre Company’s mission reflects a similar commitment: “To engage the community in important contemporary issues through provocative modern theatre.” All events for the upcoming Playwrights Showcase will be housed at Curious Theatre Company (August 5-8), while the Boot Camp for Playwrights will remain at the main campus of Red Rocks Community College (August 2-4). While there are other exciting changes in the works, the fourth Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region will still include four full days of original play readings followed by critical discussions led by a panel of theatre luminaries; inspiring workshops and panel discussions; and opportunities to network with professional playwrights, directors, producers, actors, educators and other theatre artists.

This very special event is created to support the original work of playwrights living in the Western States of Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Presented in partnership by The Red Rocks Community College Theatre Arts and Dance department and Curious Theatre Company the Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region is for playwrights, producers, directors, actors, educators and community members who are interested in sharing a vital experience that celebrates new works and the craft of playwriting.

We are also pleased to announce the Third Boot Camp for Playwrights, August 2-4, 2009, at Red Rocks Community College’s main campus; a comprehensive facility that includes a library, cafeteria, coffee bar and bookstore facilities in addition to computer labs and other public services.

The upcoming Showcase will be housed at Curious Theatre Company and will include four full days of original play readings followed by critical discussions led by a panel of theatre luminaries and special events including the Boot Camp Showcase featuring excerpts from works by Boot Camp 2009 participants. In addition, conference attendees may attend workshops and social gatherings and network with professional playwrights, directors, producers, actors, educators and other theatre artists.

Previous Showcases
The first three Playwrights Showcases of the Western Region featured many esteemed luminaries including Lee Blessing, Steven Dietz, Nagle Jackson, Kent Thompson, Richard Dresser, Jessica Goldberg, Joe Kraemer, Steven Fendrich, Dawson Moore, Chip Walton, Aoise Stratford, Sylvie Drake, Terry Dodd, Jane Page and Edith Weiss. Over 1,600 participants shared in stimulating, informative and entertaining sessions that featured excellent performances by local actors and directors in original plays written by playwrights from throughout the Western United States.  The performances were followed by inspiring and spirited discussions with the audience and facilitated by the luminaries. There were also panel discussions focusing on issues in playwriting led by our guest artists. The fourth Playwrights Showcase promises to be all this and more!
