Welcome to the Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region

Called "...the most significant event of its kind in the history of Colorado." by John Moore, Theatre Critic for the Denver Post, we are very pleased to announce the third Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region, July 18-21, 2007.

This very special event is created to support the original work of playwrights living in the western states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Presented in partnership by the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities and Red Rocks Community College’s Theatre Arts and Dance department, the Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region is for playwrights, producers, directors, actors, educators and community members who are interested in sharing a vital experience that celebrates new works and the craft of playwriting.

We are also pleased to announce the second Boot Camp for Playwrights, July 15-17, 2007, at Red Rocks Community College’s main campus, a comprehensive facility that offers a library, cafeteria, coffee bar, and bookstore facilities in addition to computer labs and other public services.

The Showcase has been expanded to include four full days of original play readings followed by critical discussions led by a panel of theatre luminaries. In addition, conference attendees will have the opportunity to participate in inspiring workshops and also network with professional playwrights, directors, producers, actors, educators and other theatre artists.  We have added two special evening events: the Boot Camp Showcase on Friday, July 20, 2007, featuring excerpts from works by Boot Camp 2007 participants; and, on July 21, 2007, there will be an exclusive, one-night only performance of works of playwrights who were featured in the previous Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region (2004 and 2005).  Red Rocks Community College will host the Showcase for July 18 and 19, and the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities will host the events held July 20 and 21, 2007. 

The first two Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region featured Lee Blessing, Steven Dietz, Nagle Jackson, Aoise Stratford, Jessica Goldberg, Joe Kraemer, Sylvie Drake, Terry Dodd, Jane Page, Steven Fendrich, Edith Weiss and Christine Emmert as esteemed luminaries.  Over 1,000 participants shared stimulating, informative and entertaining sessions that featured excellent performances by local actors and directors in original plays written by playwrights from throughout the Western United States.  The performances were followed by inspiring and spirited discussions with the audience and facilitated by the luminaries. There were also panel discussions focusing on issues in playwriting led by our guest artists.
