Welcome to Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of the two year college with over 1200 chapters worldwide. Membership is open only to students who meet the eligibility requirements. Our chapter, Alpha Kappa Sigma, plans activities throughout the year based on the society Hallmarks of Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Fellowship.

Alpha Kappa Sigma invites new members to join during the fall and spring semesters.  Eligible students, those who have a 3.5 GPA and have completed 12 credits of 100 level classes and above, will receive a letter of invitation from the college president.

An Award Winning Chapter

At the International Convention in Nashville, Alpha Kappa Sigma received recognition as one of the top 25 Chapters. With over 1200 chapters worldwide, our chapter is very proud of this award which is based on activities in the areas of Service, Leadership and Scholarship.

Alpha Kappa Sigma was also named the Most Distinguished Chapter in the Region for 2006.

Phi Theta Kappa, earned several awards from last weekend’s Regional Spring Convention

Alpha Kappa Sigma, Red Rocks Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, earned several awards from last weekend’s Regional Spring Convention. Alpha Kappa Sigma was one of only four chapters to earn Five-Star Status, reflecting the top level of achievement during the previous year.

Based on the programs and events the chapter conducted during 2009, Alpha Kappa Sigma took second place in two categories:  Leadership and Scholarship. Additionally, the chapter advisor, Carolyn Mattern was recognized as the most distinguished advisor for the region.

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of two-year colleges. There are 23 chapters in
the Colorado Region and over 1200 chapters world-wide. Alpha Kappa Sigma provides service, leadership and scholarship opportunities to the campus. Chapter programs and activities last year included Constitution Day, Honors Topic Seminars, Trick or Treat on the Rocks and book drives.
The chapter also supported Relay for Life, the 9Health Fair and Fire Muster events held at Red Rocks Community College. The officer team also collaborated with faculty to develop a new credit course
to begin in Fall 2010. The course will focus on the honors study topic: The Democratization of Information; Power, Peril and Promise.

Members who attended the Regional Convention included David Clark, President, David Shannon, Vice-President, Kalia Kehoe, Vice-President, Melissa Cary, Public Relations Officer, Catherine Njue and Carolyn Mattern, Advisor.

What are the benefits of being a member?

There are many opportunities for transfer scholarships, leadership development and service to the college and community. Members who become officers have opportunities to attend training and conferences at the regional and national levels.

What are some of the activities members participate in during the academic year?

Trick or Treat on the Rocks (a Halloween event for young children) Constitution Day, Satellite Seminars on the Honors Study Topic, Relay for Life, Book Drives, Food Drives

What is the time commitment?

There is no requirement for service. Those who are interested in participating can volunteer for as little as an hour or two per event or as much as chairing a committee that works on a project over several weeks time.
