EDU 221 Introduction to Teacher Education

  • 3 credits
  • Co-requisite: EDU 275 Field- Based Experience
  • This course will explore teaching as a career and explain the social, political, historical and economic forces that shape the United States system of K-12 public schooling Topics include the history and philosophy of education, public purposes of schooling, issues critical to today’s public schools and issues related to becoming a teacher in the state of Colorado.

EDU 242 Expressive Arts in the Elementary Classroom

  • 3 credits
  • Explores the integration of visual arts, music, and physical education/movement into the self-contained elementary classroom curriculum based upon the theory of multiple intelligences.  Familiarizes the student with the Colorado Model Content Standards for each area, basic curriculum development, and the opportunities to practice their skills with students through field experiences.

EDU 261 Teaching, Learning and Technology

  • 3 credits
  • The purpose of this course is to develop essential computer skills necessary for teaching in today's schools. Emphasis will be placed on the knowledge necessary to use technology to support standards-based instruction and enhance student learning. Students will learn current instructional principles, research, and appropriate assessment practices related to the use of computers and technology resources in the curriculum.

EDU 275 Field-Based Experience

  • 1 credit
  • Co-requisite: EDU 221 Introduction to Teacher Education
  • This purpose of this class will be to acquaint the college student with the real world of the classroom teacher and to give the student additional input for wise and early career choices. Measurable objectives that identify competencies include the 30 hours of classroom observations which must be entered in a "log" describing time, date, activities observed, and teacher signature. Other objectives include writing assignments that require subjective analysis and evaluation of their career choice.

LIT 255 Children’s Literature

  • 3 credits
  • Lit 255 explores values taught through literature as well as literary and artistic qualities of various texts. The course evaluates criteria for appropriate children’s literature selection by presenting a variety of genre.

MAT 155 Math for Elementary Teachers Part 1
(Integrated Math)

  • 3 credits
  • This is the first of a two-course sequence particularly pertinent to prospective elementary and arithmetic teachers, presenting arithmetic and algebra from a modern approach.  Topics include natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, relations, functions, and equations.

MAT 156 Math for Elementary Teachers Part 2 (Integrated Math)

  • 3 credits
  • This is the second of a two-course sequence pertinent to prospective elementary and arithmetic teachers, presenting arithmetic and algebra from a modern approach.  Topics include the fundamentals of probability, statistics, and informal Euclidean geometry, including constructions. 

SCI 155 Integrated Science Part 1

  • 3 credits
  • SCI 155 is the first semester of the integrated science series.  In SCI 155 students will investigate the intersection of physics with chemistry. Topics covered include the laws of motion, conservation of energy, heat and natural energy sources, waves, earthquakes and tsunamis, electricity and magnetism, basic chemistry, chemical reactions, radioactivity and nuclear power and other areas of interface between the two disciplines.  This is an exciting course that integrates both disciplines and emphasizes our relationship with the physical world. The material is presented using real world news and scientific developments to emphasize the relevance of science in today’s world.

SCI 156 Integrated Science Part 2

  • 3 credits
  • SCI 156 is the second semester of the integrated science series.  In SCI 156, students are exposed to a synthesis of geology and biology.  Topics covered include the origins of the planet and the life upon it, interactions between climatology and life, how to interpret land forms and the implications for ecoregions, basic mineralogy, basic biological chemistry, cell structure and metabolism, and other areas of interface between the two disciplines.  This is an exciting course that brings together the best of both disciplines and presents the material in a fashion that makes sense within the context of today’s world.
