RRCC Building Connections

It’s year three – progress has been made, exciting processes have been put into motion, and there are many goals yet to achieve!

Colorado Construction Career Days:  TEPP was a member of the organizing committee for an unbelievable two day event in October.  The committee, composed of representatives from most of the major construction organizations (contractors, engineers, suppliers, colleges, apprenticeship programs), hosted close to 1,000 students from 25 schools/districts for two days of hands-on activities.  The fun included heavy equipment operating, masonry, traffic engineering, surveying, sheet metal box-building, carpentry, safety and many others.  Over 200 industry volunteers worked to provide activities and conversation for the students.

RRCC President Cliff Richardson was a welcoming speaker – and made quite an impression on students, teachers and volunteers by giving away two full-semester scholarships!

Check out the student and adult evaluations and comments. Plans are already underway for next year’s event!

Check out the “High School Updates” for details on the Construction Academy and the “Geometry Principles” curriculum.  It looks like the academy model will expand from this year’s five schools to a minimum of eight (possibly eleven) schools for 2005-6!  Many thanks to math teachers Jane Bretzlauf, Roger Griffin and Dave Purcell and construction trades instructors Matt Brown and Rex Roben for their hard work and support this year.  Milender White Construction Company, Haselden Construction Inc., and The Weitz Company have provided outstanding industry support for these teachers.

Exciting new curriculum in the works:  Matt Brown, construction trades/CAD instructor at Lakewood High School has begun work on updating/expanding the content of RRCC’s ENY 101, Introduction to Energy Technologies. With support from his principal Ron Castagna, Matt is working with staff at the National Renewable Energy Lab and TEPP to write a two semester course based on alternative energy.  Students will receive both construction technology and science credit at the high school level and can enroll for RRCC Construction Technology credit as well.

Students will study energy theory, usage, policy, and construct projects which demonstrate solar, wind, biomass, hydrogen and geothermal methods of power generation.  The course will be piloted at Lakewood HS, Middle College of Denver at the Career Education Center and Red Rocks Community College during the 2005-6 academic year.  If you have expertise/interest/ideas and would like to be involved in writing or teaching the course, please contact Cathy Rock at cathy.rock@rrcc.edu

You can find the preliminary course outline under “Red Rocks Update”.  You can also check out the course outline for CON 111, Introduction to Construction Part 2.  The response has been so positive to Part 1 – we’ve added a second semester which focuses on finish trades (drywall, flooring, millwork, etc.).

Also under “Red Rocks Update” is an article about our Construction Career Camps.  The three intensive sections of CON 110 offered for students from Mi Casa Resource Center for Women have been such a success that there are four scheduled for 2005.  Tricounty Workforce Center’s Youthworks program will be offering the summer camp format again in summer of 2005.
