The RRCC Online Writing Center

FYI: We are open for Spring tutoring as of Jan. 25, 2010.

Who Uses the OWC?

RRCC students, facult and staff interested in improving their writing may submit papers and grammar inquiries to the OWC.

When Can I Use the OWC?

You can use the OWC Monday - Sunday when classes are in session. Tutors monitor the OWC seven days a week during the fifteen-week spring 2010 semester. Writing assignments sent to tutors will be reviewed and commented upon within 48 hours of receipt.

Policies

The aim of the OWC is not necessarily to help you perfect the end product of a writing assignment but to work on the process of writing so that you will become a more confident as well as a more competent writer.
Instruction yes, proofreading no. We do not proofread (e.g. find and correct all the mistakes) or do your writing for you. Tutors will, however, teach you how to find and correct mistakes. Our goal is to help you become your own editor.

Be prepared. The better you understand and can explain to us your teacher's expectations and the requirements of your writing task, the better we can help you.

Be specific. When you send a paper to a tutor, please make your request(s) as specific as possible. For example, identify particular concerns about thesis, clarity, organization, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, etc. If you send a paper with only a request like "please check this over," we can't.

No time to lose. Be good managers of your time so that we will have time to help you. It might take us a day or two to respond to an essay you send to us; if it was "due tomorrow," you will not have the best advantage of our services.

Don't go there. Although we provide resources and information to help you improve your writing, we cannot discuss grades or evaluate your papers.

Do go there. We welcome your comments and feedback to help us improve our services.

Mission Statement

Red Rocks Community College's Online Writing Center (OWC) is committed to helping students learn to write better. Our tutors, all of whom are fully qualified English instructors, are available to work with students in any subject area to improve their writing skills, offering them strategies and resources for succeeding in any kind of writing assignment, including essays, term papers, and essay exams. Tutors can help students generate, organize, and develop topics, revise and edit with confidence, and observe conventions of format and documentation.

The OWC site menu includes a variety of sources of information such as Grammar Express, Writing Classroom, Other Resources, and FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).

In addition to looking at the information available at the OWC, students can also send specific questions to Grammar Express and send papers to a tutor for consultation.
