Red Rocks Foundation Board recognizes excellent faculty
Business Department Chair Wendy Bird lauded with Endowed Teaching Chair award
LAKEWOOD, CO – Wendy Bird has been selected as the 2013-2015 Mike Leprino Family Foundation Endowed Teaching Chair. The RRCC Foundation Teaching Chair program, the only multi-year faculty award in the Colorado Community College System, is a meaningful way of recognizing and awarding outstanding faculty. The Mike Leprino Family Foundation and Coors Brewing Company endowed the first two chairs in 2001.
Bird became full-time Red Rocks faculty in 2004 and has chaired the business department since 2011. Her philosophy of teaching is founded on respect, humanity, humor, and passion. “These are the concepts that shape not only my philosophy, but who I am,” she stated. Respect is at the core of her teaching approach, “I try to respect my students by being prepared and knowledgeable, providing accurate information, making class interesting, and setting high expectations for learning. Most importantly, I value every student as an individual.”
When asked about receiving the award Bird commented, “I truly love to share my enthusiasm for education with students, and the greatest reward is knowing that what I do makes a difference to them. The Teaching Chair is such a powerful affirmation that I’m on the right track. To have my colleagues and the Foundation members see what my students see, and to acknowledge the excellence that I strive for is really such a tremendous honor.”
Bird holds her Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School and her Bachelor of Arts in French from Saginaw Valley State University, both in Michigan. Prior to joining the full-time faculty at RRCC, Bird was a practicing attorney in Colorado. She is also a licensed Real Estate broker and teaches business law and real estate courses at RRCC.
Recipients of a RRCC Teaching Chair Award are selected from full-time faculty following a portfolio review and initial screening by a panel of faculty representatives. The panel then forwards a list of finalists to the RRCC Foundation Board of Directors for final selection. Each recipient is awarded a three-year salary enhancement of $5,000 per year in addition to $2,500 per year for professional development.
The Foundation Board Selection Committee noted how impressed they were with the quality of this year’s presentations and how difficult it was to make a final selection; A tremendous compliment to all finalists, Berndt Savig, Art, Wendy Bird, Business, and Craig Faulhaber, Math.
The Foundation Board would also like to congratulate Donna Armelino, Chris Howell, and Kelly Worden, who were also nominated for the award and presented before the faculty committee.
