Red Rocks Community College Presents World War II Day

Experiential learning event commemorates 70-year anniversary of war's end

LAKEWOOD, CO – On April 9, 2015 Red Rocks Community College will bring history to life with World War II Day, a free community event at the college’s Lakewood campus to commemorate the 70-year anniversary of the end of the war. This experiential learning event will allow participants to experience living history and understand its effect on the future, while paying tribute to those who defended our country at home and abroad.

“This event provides a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate to students, staff and community members the importance of WWII and its lasting effects on society in the 21st century,” said Linnie Pawlek, History department lead who spearheaded the event.

Among the activities of World War II Day are historical re-enactments with camps of the European and Pacific Theatres, flyovers of North American WWII aircraft, two USO shows, a display of period military vehicles, swing and tap lessons, live music by Billy and the Fox Trots, an onsite broadcast from nostalgic radio AM 1430 KEZW, and WWII displays from several museums.

In addition, participants will be able to share in panel discussions and meet veterans who lived through the heartbreak and glory of WWII.  Students from multiple disciplines will present projects to highlight new technology, social changes, political reforms, and daily life adaptations that came about as a result of WWII.  Faculty and guest lecturers will present topics such as Just War Theory and Ethics and Japanese American Internment Camps. More than 150 Red Rocks students and staff members will be dressed in period costumes from President Harry S. Truman to Winston Churchill to Rosie the Riveter.
