RRCC Celebrates National Week of the Young Child

LAKEWOOD, CO – Red Rocks Community College invites the local and college community to come together for children during the Week of the Young Child (April 10-16, 2016).  As part of the national Week of the Young Child™ celebrated across the country, Red Rocks is honoring young children and all those who make a difference in children’s lives.

The departments of Childcare Innovations, Early Childhood Education (ECE) and the Children’s Center, in partnership with Triad Early Childhood Council, have organized an event on Thursday, April 7 in the Grand Foyer at RRCC’s Lakewood campus.

  • Meet Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul during a surprise special recognition 5:00 to 5:30 p.m.
  • Pizza and activities 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

RRCC has a long standing history in promoting learning throughout the life span, starting with early childhood programming offered by the departments hosting this event.  Under the college leadership of Dr. Michele Haney, Red Rocks Community College has 77 early childhood professionals working together in three areas, the RRCC Children’s Center, the Early Childhood Education program, and Child Care Innovations, to improve professional practice and working conditions in early childhood education, and to build public support for high-quality early childhood education programs.

Last year’s special recognition award was given to the Arvada Community Food Bank for its creation of a safe, supervised Children’s Wait Area to care for the children of families that come to access food bank services. With strong community partners to support the young children and their families in our communities, these children can look forward to a brighter future.

Participants will have opportunity to get information about various community resources available to young children and their families.  In addition, a children’s “Art and Documentation of Learning” will be on display April 1-13 in the college halls. Children’s art from various early childhood programs located in the community will be on display in the east hallway on campus.

“Because young children learn through their heads, their hands, and their hearts, we want to display art work from this unique period of learning, highlighting amazing development of thought and skill during the early years,” said Janiece Kneppe, ECE faculty.

Week of the Young Child, sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), is an opportunity for early childhood programs across the country, including child care and Head Start programs, preschools, and elementary schools, to hold activities to bring awareness to the needs of young children.

Young children and their families depend on high-quality education and care, which help children get a great start and bring lasting benefits to Jefferson County.  Week of the Young Child is a time to recognize the importance of early learning and early literacy, and to celebrate the teachers and policies that bring early childhood education to young children.
