STUDENTS PROVIDE FREE TAX PREPARATION FOR FAMILIES
Partnership with Tax Help Colorado fills a vital need for families with incomes under $55,000

LAKEWOOD CO – This tax season, Red Rocks Community College is partnering with Denver-based Piton Foundation to help hard-working families become more financially secure by providing free tax preparation services through the Tax Help Colorado program. Beginning February 9, 2019, IRS-certified students will prepare and file tax returns free of charge for individuals with household incomes of less than about $55,000 a year.

On average, tax preparation in Colorado can cost $200—tax-filing services at Tax Help Colorado sites are completely free-of-charge. In addition to getting their taxes done for free, taxpayers may be eligible for valuable, refundable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit. Tax preparers are trained to ensure the families they serve get the best refund possible. The program also helps students develop customer service skills, achieve practical, hands-on experience, serve their community and earn college credits.

This free service will be offered at Red Rocks Community College, Lakewood Campus from February 9, 2019 – March 16, 2019 at 13300 W. 6th Ave, Room 1103, Lakewood, CO 80228. Saturday s, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Park in the East lot of the campus and use the East entrance.

People who are getting their taxes prepared at RRCC should bring the following documents:

  • All W-2, 1099 and other income-related documents.
  • Proof of mortgage interest, property taxes, daycare payments, college education expenses, charitable contributions, and all other tax-deductible expenses.
  • For college expenses: In addition to Form 1098T from your college, you must bring your own records of expenses paid for tuition, books, fees and supplies.
  • To report health coverage, you will need one of these forms: 1095-A, 1095-B, and/or 1095-C.
  • If you received a tax credit to lower the cost of paying health insurance, bring form 1095-A, which you received from Connect for Health Colorado.
  • Social Security cards (or ITINs) for all family members. Photo I.D. for taxpayer required.
  • A copy of last year’s tax returns, if available.
  • Bank account number and routing number to direct deposit the refund. With direct deposit, refunds are received in 10 to 14 days
