Meet Becky

"I have been attending Red Rocks since the spring semester of 2011. Before I enrolled, I had just moved back in with my mom after living with my dad in California for seven months. He originally had promised to pay for my education since my original plan was to live with him and go to school to pursue a degree in performing arts. When my dad didn’t fulfill his promise because out-of-state tuition for me would be expensive, I had no choice but to leave. I live up in Bailey so there aren’t very many good colleges that are near me. My sister had already been going to Red Rocks for a year and had thoroughly enjoyed her experiences here, so she helped me get enrolled and choose my classes for my first semester.

Despite a difficult first semester, I have been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA. I have also had my life touched by instructors and students alike who have shown me taught me some very valuable lessons. The most important thing I’ve learned is that while it was very unfortunate that my initial plan to go to school in California didn’t work out the way I wanted to, I am not a victim of my circumstances. If I put in the effort, I can achieve anything.

In fall of 2011, I found out my efforts paid off when I received a letter in the mail informing me I was eligible for Phi Theta Kappa. Originally, I had no idea what that meant. After visiting the organization’s website, I discovered membership with Phi Theta Kappa could potentially open me up to exclusive scholarships. So far, being a part of Phi Theta Kappa has proven to be a very rewarding experience. Not only have I earned scholarship money to further my education, but I have also had the opportunity to meet fantastic people from all walks of life through the development of the Rockstar Program.

My time at Red Rocks will be over after the fall 2013 semester. From there, I will go on to Metro State University. I am very sad to see it go by so quickly. In my time here, I have discovered my potential as a human being. For starters, I changed my major from performing arts to psychology. While performing arts will always be my first love, I want to devote my life to helping others not unlike how so many people at Red Rocks have helped me. I have also found employment up in the library at Red Rocks. I haven’t worked very many jobs before, but I can honestly say it is the best working environment I have ever been exposed to.

Red Rocks has given me a new lease on life and an opportunity to be whoever I want to be. For that, I will always be in debt to this fine institution."
