Red Rocks Community College Celebrates Reopening of Library During National Library Week

Located on the Lakewood Campus on the second floor of the East Building, the Red Rocks library supports students, faculty, and staff in the classroom and beyond.

The library’s long-awaited reopening coincides with National Library Week (April 6-12, 2025), which celebrates the role of libraries, librarians, and library workers in transforming lives and communities. A display with books about libraries will be featured all week.

President Landon Pirius Attends Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony with Staff and Students

To celebrate the reopening, the library services staff hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, April 7. Red Rocks President Landon Pirius and other leadership team members were in attendance, and the college mascot, Copper, made an appearance. Students, faculty, staff, and community members were also invited to explore the library’s new and existing offerings.

“My team is thrilled to be able to provide valuable resources in the library to the community again,” says Robert Vaughn, director of the Red Rocks library. “For those who have used the library’s resources and for students who haven’t been to the library before, we are excited to welcome everyone and support them on their academic journeys.”

New Library Resources

The library is introducing some new resources:

A Library of Things – This collection of items supports students’ curricular needs as well as their non-curricular pursuits and hobbies. The Library of Things continues to grow and currently includes:

  • Anatomical models (skeletons, torsos, brains, skulls, hearts, and muscles)
  • Art kits
  • Backpacks
  • Binoculars
  • Blu-ray player
  • Calculators (scientific and graphing)
  • Colorado state parks passes that offer free admission to Colorado’s 43 state parks
  • Dungeons & Dragons starter set
  • Geology kits
  • Maps
  • Microscope
  • Wildlife books
  • Portable sewing machine
  • Telescopes

Wellness/Flex Space

This versatile area of the library offers a quiet space for reflection, meditation, prayer, and relaxation. Soon, visitors will be able to enjoy guided meditation, yoga, and other classes taught by Red Rocks staff, instructors, and community members.

Faculty-Donated Stone Art on Display

The library now features artwork donated by Red Rocks Visual Art faculty member Berndt Savig: an Indiana limestone plaque with hand-chiseled lettering reading, “Lifelong Learning.” While on sabbatical in 2024, Berndt studied stone letter cutting and attended two different workshops (one in the United Kingdom). He carved the library piece while at the Indiana Limestone Symposium.

“Since lifelong learning is something I associate with Red Rocks, I felt it was appropriate to donate that to the college, and Robert felt it was good fit for the library,” says Berndt. He has taught sculpture and fine art at Red Rocks for over 20 years.
