High School Preparation for an Engineering Degree

So you are interested in pursuing an engineering degree in college – that’s great! In order to be well prepared to start an engineering degree, you should take the most challenging courses possible in math and sciences offered at your high school. This usually means having taken calculus by your senior year of high school. To accomplish this will take some planning, such as having taken algebra before high school and geometry early on in high school.

If you didn’t quite make it into the higher math and science classes in high school, Red Rocks Community College can help. We offer courses to prepare you for Calculus I such as College Algebra, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. Talk to an advisor today to begin your engineering transfer degree!

Suggested High School Courses

There are no set courses you have to take in high school in order to become an engineer.  These are merely some suggestions for courses you can take in order to pursue engineering in college.  Here are some high school courses that will help you get started on an engineering path.

English – four years.  Engineers need very good communication skills in order to work on teams, give presentations, and interact with clients.

Math – four years.  Math is needed for solving problems in engineering.  Take as many rigorous math courses as you can at your high school.

Sciences – at least three courses in chemistry, biology, and physics.
Engineering Technology:  Most high schools offer an introduction to engineering course. Through this course you learn about how engineers design, plan and build projects. This is a great way to decide whether you want to be an engineer.

Social Studies – two-years.  Engineers solve problems in complex political, social, and economic contexts. Having an understanding of local and global challenges will make you a better engineer.

Foreign Language – two years.  Engineers travel abroad, especially when the projects they work on require interacting with industries and research centers from around the globe. Understanding at least one foreign language can help develop an awareness of cross-cultural communication, an important skill for today’s workforce.

More information for high school students who would like to attend RRCC can be found here.

Colorado School of Mines (CSM) EPICS Course

Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) has an articulated transfer agreement with the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). As part of this agreement RRCC students are eligible to register for the CSM class EDNS 151 (Engineering Practices Introductory Sequence) through RRCC.

In order to sign up for EDNS 151 you must have taken Calculus 201 or be registered for it in the same semester you take EDNS 151. Also you must have at least a 2.75 GPA to request this class.

Please contact Jen Broadwater for more information:  Jen Broadwater (jen.broadwater@rrcc.edu) 303.914.6254

Steps to register for EPIC 151 (Engineering Practices Introductory Course Sequence).

On the Red Rocks Community College campus:

  1. Apply to RRCC.
  2. Complete the on-line RRCC orientation
  3. Fill out the RRCC to CSM registration form (see below).
  4. Select the section of EDNS 151 that you prefer.
  5. Turn the form into Jen Broadwater.  She will forward your information to CSM.
  6. CSM will create a student account, issuing you a CSM student ID number called a CWID (College Wide ID) and an E-Key (pin number).
  7. CSM will email both you and RRCC, letting us know which class you are in or if the class is full. CSM will send RRCC your CWID which we will forward to you.  Please remember that all email will be sent to your student email account. CSM will also send you an informative email detailing how to set up your “Trailhead” portal access and your CSM email account.
  8. At RRCC, you will be register in AAA 175 501 (EDNS 151), a generic class for EPICS.  Please remember that we use CSM’s drop and withdrawal dates for AAA 175 501. Also, be aware that CSM’s beginning and ending dates may not match RRCC’s.  You may go to https://catalog.mines.edu/calendar/ to view CSM’s Academic Calendar.
  9. You will pay your tuition at RRCC.
On the Colorado School of Mines campus
  1. Pay both the technology and parking fee. Set up your parking fee before you go to pay. If you do not plan on driving to CSM you will need a parking waiver from their Parking Department.
  2. Buy the EPICS packet at the CSM bookstore.
  3. Set up both your “Trailhead” account and your CSM email.
  4. Through Trailhead, you can drop and add  a different section or withdraw from an EPIC section. Make sure to let RRCC know if you drop or withdraw. Remember you are enrolled at both colleges.
